8 Ways to Make Yourself Happy When Feeling Stressed or Depressed

I see life and our overall wellbeing as a complex jigsaw puzzle and ‘stressed pieces’ don’t fit together. The key to ‘life’s puzzle’ is to find and fix our Emotional, Physical and Environmental stresses so our pieces can connect again. That’s why I say life is a journey filled with happiness when all our jigsaw pieces work together – The ‘Big 3’ Stress Solutions Puzzle...

Hi Everyone!

You know when you have those years where you are put through your paces? The ones were significate life altering events rock your world? Want to know how to be happy again? This is what I’ve been doing because I refuse to allow depression or stress overwhelm me!

‘Flashback’ – early this year I’m in Australia reading an article on FB about ‘How Your Past Can Make You Happy’. I felt like it was the universe’s way of telling me everything is going to be ok because I subconsciously realise I’ve always practiced this technique when I’m down and out because it works.

So, one morning I went through my old CD’s I had in storage and put on my music loudly when no one was home. I jumped on the cross trainer and exercised away as the music transported me back in time to a happy place when I lived in the Gold Coast in Australia.

Not only did I think about happy times, I also remembered how I got through some very hard times back then. This allowed me to reiterated and confirm I can and will do it again!

This positive reinforcement reduced my emotional stress for a few hours by breaking the negative cycle, which is overall imperative to our metal health. I also practiced these other things listed below.

8 ways to make yourself happy

1. Fighting depression and stress through Music

Putting on music that transports you back to happier times is a great way to reduce emotional stress. Put it on an exercise or walk along the beach, go driving in your car and turn it up! In my personal experience listening to music and exercising have been every powerful ways to fight depression and stress.

2. Laughter brings happiness through Movies

For me, I love comedies and romantic comedies from the 80’s. They were funny, light hearted and just silly.  When I’m laughing, I feel better. They say laughter is the best medicine.

3. Watch TV Shows you enjoy to feel better

When I’m upset, I find watching shows like Friends, Frasier or Seinfeld on in the background soothing. Other TV shows I enjoy are The West Wing, Melrose Place, Dynasty and Dallas. Sometimes we just need to relax and forget about everything and have a good laugh. Alternatively, if you’re not laughing at least enjoying what you’re watching! Note that laughing releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy!

4. How to feel happy again by visiting Locations

It can be any location that triggers happy memories for you. It might be where you grew up. Places you and your best friend used to hang out. For me I love Sydney Harbour, somehow it just makes me feel at peace within myself. The harbour is magical!

5. Photos of happy times can make you feel better

We all reminisce when we go through photos so find a few old albums and start flicking through them. When we see photos, they can trigger memories of so much happiness.  This reminds us we can be happy and we will be happy again. Think about what was happening around the time of those photos? You recreate new memories and make more happy photos!

6. Look good Feel good so get dressed up!

We all know when we look good it makes us feel better! So start wearing all your clothes you love and feel confident in. This helps your mind remember you’re fabulous and that makes us happy! In the photo above I’m wearing one of my favourite scarfs from Hermes whilst read Joan Collins on the train heading to Antwerp for the day when I was living in Utrecht in the Netherlands!

7. Fragrances can trigger happy thoughts

Smell has an incredibly powerful way of triggering our memories. If there was a fragrance you used to love and wore it during a happy time in your life, maybe now’s the time to start smelling it again.

8. Reading can help us forget about our problems

Sometimes we have books that transport us to another place in time where we feel happy. I used to read ‘The Saddle Club’ when I was younger around the time I was 12 years old. Not that I would read that now I’m just using it as an example. For some people it might be Harry Potter, Fifty Shades of Grey, one of the awesome stories by Stephen King or something from the now late but totally fabulous Jackie Collins.

Alternatively, you can read helpful books like The Four Agreements to help retain the brain into more positive thoughts! (blog below)

So what does the ‘Big 3’ Stress Solutions Puzzle look like when it comes to 8 Ways to Make Yourself Happy When Feeling Stressed or Depressed?

We all go through hard times where we are cry uncontrollably and feel depressed. That’s what we do when we’re emotionally stressed!

The point of this exercise is to ‘train the brain’ and remember how to be happy. When we are positive it reduces stress. And I know sometimes you just want to say “Screw it, screw this, screw the world, I just don’t care!” which is totally fine too! However, after you’re gone through the ‘screw that period’ then try to think of some things that made you happy.

I’ll be honest on some day’s I’ve struggled to do this exercise, and I still believe it’s important to feel the hurt so we can heal. Lessons in life can be cruel. But there is always hope and light at the end of the tunnel.

Remember my motto for positive change is ‘Little Puzzle Pieces Create a Big Picture’… Remembering I can be happy is imperative to my mental health. If we only see darkness we can’t find the light and the light is what we need to find. So, try my technique and see how you feel.

Most importantly I practice my Positive 3 Series (blog below) to be best of my ability because it helps! I can’t allow my emotional stress to overrun my body giving me added physical stress. There’s only so much one can take! Healthy body equals healthy mind and clarity gives perspective! Through all of this remember we can and will be happy again.

Until next time be thoughtful, be mindful, be present. This is Character 32 doing her best to help you!
