I Question GMO Safety After All This Research I’ve Done

I see life and our overall wellbeing as a complex jigsaw puzzle and ‘stressed pieces’ don’t fit together. The key to ‘life’s puzzle’ is to find and fix our Emotional, Physical and Environmental stresses so our pieces can connect again. That’s why I say life is a journey filled with happiness when all our jigsaw pieces work together – The ‘Big 3’ Stress Solutions Puzzle...

Hello, I'm Character 32 and welcome back!

Here a GMO, there a GMO, everywhere I go…. there seems to be a GMO! This multi-billion dollar chemical company industry has taken hold over a large portion of the food supply and has no intention of ever letting it go…….

I think as end-consumers we have a right to know what’s in our food supply, if something new has been introduced, and how it will affect us. So today I want to delve into the GMO world and look what the potential impact to our health may be when consuming GMOs over a long period.

WHO, the World Health Organization describes ‘Genetically modified (GM) foods as foods derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally.’

But first, let’s be very clear on what type of GMO I am talking about here because most of our food has been genetically modified over the years. I’m referring to the Roundup Ready GMO foods being grown by chemical companies such as Monsanto.

It was around 2005 I recall listening to a conversation between a scientist and a radio presenter while sitting in my office typing away on a document. They were deliberating their concerns regarding the safety over GMO foods. Within minutes I’d concluded that GMO foods altered to withstand the direct spray of harmful chemicals wasn’t something I wanted to eat. I assumed it would be announced when it entered the market. Well you know what they say about assumptions?...

In 1996 a company called Monsanto introduced the Roundup Ready® technology, which permitted direct application for weed control in glyphosate-tolerant crops (GMO). Since then there’s been a global mass production of these crops which have entered our food supply. I don’t recall being told about this when it was first introduced to the market. What about you?

Here’s the GMO breakdown in the USA alone [1]

  • 80% of all processed foods contain GMOs.
  • Over 80% of all their Corn in GMO
  • Over 90% of all their Soy is GMO
  • Over 85% of all their Cotton grown is GMO
  • Around 90% of all their Canola and Sugar beets are GMO
  • There are approximately 165 Million acres of GMOs in the USA
  • The Atrazine chemical which is sprayed on GMOs is the most common found contaminant of ground water in the USA

[1] Globally there are over 420 million acres of GMO crops worldwide. That’s a huge amount of glyphosate and atrazine entering our food and water supply don’t you think?

In March 2015 Scientific America published an article titled ‘Widely Used Herbicide Linked to Cancer’. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide, is probably carcinogenic to humans.

The European regulators have banned the use of Atrazine as it’s been linked to birth defects, low birth weights, menstrual problems and exposure to animals in brief doses before birth may be more susceptible to cancer later. Yet it’s still widely used in countries such as Australia, Canada and the USA.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine reported studies done on animals. The horrific outcomes concluded reports such as organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging and also infertility.

The practice of spraying an extra 383 million pounds of herbicide on ‘herbicide tolerant’ GMOs was conducted by US farmers between 1996 to 2008. The more resistant the GM crops become the more they are sprayed. GM foods contain high amounts of harmful herbicides which have been liked to hormone disruption, birth defects, sterility, and cancer.

Are you starting to see a pattern forming?

So how exposed to GMOs are you?

Each country has a different stance on GMOs so that determines your exposure. Corn, soy, cotton (cottonseed oil), canola, and sugar beets are the main culprits to watch out for. Unfortunately, their derivatives are used in processed foods on a mass scale both throughout the USA and globally.

If you want to avoid GMOs here’s what to look for on the packaging

  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Corn syrup
  • Corn starch
  • Modified starch
  • Maize
  • Polenta
  • Soy
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Soybean oil
  • Sucrose
  • Sugar

[1] Another factor that comes into play is the meat and dairy industry. Farming practices have seen the rise of GMO feed in livestock globally. Meat, dairy, cheese, eggs and yogurts will be GMO if the livestock eats GMO feed due to cross contamination. The knock-on effect means chocolate made from dairy from the livestock, then sugar from GMO sugar beet is one large GMO block of processed food.

So when you think about processed foods, packaged foods, tin foods, chocolate bars, potato chips, yogurt, sauces etc it pays to look at what is labeled on the packaging. If it’s a GMO and/or GMO derivative they are NOT going to tell you! I’m even careful when a product says ‘Organic’ because sometimes not all the ingredients are 100% organic. You really need to read the labels carefully or one might be slipped in somewhere!

Other GMO produce that’s small (predominately USA) but slowly making its way into the market is

  • Tomato
  • Apple
  • Alfalfa
  • Potato
  • Papaya
  • Tobacco
  • Flax
  • Salmon (yes fish!)
  • Rice

So what does the ‘Big 3’ Stress Management Puzzle look like when it comes to I Question GMO Safety After All This Research I’ve Done

There is a lot more research about GMOs that I will share with you later in another blog. Also, corn gives me anxiety! Blog post here.

The Big 3 Short Term

As I have previously stated in The Dirty Dozen/Clean 15 blog, harmful pesticides are an environmental stress in our air, water and food supply. When these harmful chemicals surround us daily it affects us in multiple ways.

We become physically stressed through our environmental stress due to the harmful nature of ‘GMO foods’. Our bodies aren’t designed to have so many foreign food compounds attacking its internal ecosystem. Over time the eco balance is disrupted giving your cells a ‘green light’ to go haywire. The body can start to attack itself because it’s no longer able to cope with the stress. Once these factors come into play our emotional stress begins to take hold.

Emotional stress through our physical stress accelerates the body breaking down. It’s the cause and effect reaction our bodies produce when the catch 22 situation is in play. The sicker we physically get the more emotionally we struggle. One impacts the other and vice versa.

GMOs are chemically engineered grown foods lacking the vital nutrition our bodies and minds to function. *Anxiety and depression can be trigger by poor nutrition taking us to another level of emotional stress. *I’ll do a post on Leaky Gut Syndrome to show how the brain and gut work together.

How does the ‘Big 3’ work here? When both the physical and emotional stress reacts to the environmental stress overload. It was initiated by the environmental stress which was the ‘trigger factor’ in this case. It’s like asbestos causes cancer and nuclear waste is deadly, here the same principle applies. It’s just we are slowly, little by little each day, exposing ourselves to these harmful chemicals. When our body triggers a reaction, it’s telling you to ‘STOP’ and change your ways.  If you don’t listen dark days will come your way.

Your stressful cycle can be broken by making the necessary changes your body requires. In this instance, it’s about nourishing the body through healthy eating and avoid GMOs.

The Big 3 Long Term

As the saying goes ‘Think globally, act locally’….. I like to think big, think global, think about the long term……

These companies are fighting and spending huge amounts of money fighting labeling laws stating what foods contain GMOs. Why? If they’re that safe, then why fight labeling laws?

Our food, water and air supply become more contaminated with each passing day. We are eating chemicals, drinking chemicals and breathing chemicals 24/7. Our soil is suffering, our bodies are rebelling and we are the only ones who can change this.

I vote with my wallet each and every day by purchasing NON-GMO products. Companies are forced to change their ways when their P&L weighs heavily in the loss column. Supply and demand is the name of the game and without your money they suffer! #hahahaha

By saying NO to chemicals in your food supply your also supporting cleaner air and water. You benefit, your family and friends benefits and the world becomes a healthier place for us all.

No matter what your stance on GMOs are, I urge you to consider this. I look around, talk to people and everywhere I turn there’s cancer, autism, gluten intolerances, autoimmunity issues, to name but a few which seem to be more prevalent now than ever before. Have you noticed this? I wonder if it’s all coincidental? Or has something entered our food/water supply causing this to happen?

Until next time be thoughtful, be mindful, be present. This is Character 32 doing her best to help you!
