I love Japan for so many reasons, I guess that’s why we’ve been there so many times! Ha ha ha (I’ll blog about that soon!). So, this time around we wanted to experience something a little different. We saw an ad on one of the trains in Japan for Atami so we decided to check it out, here is what we experienced.
The four of us got on the bullet train to Atami from Tokyo and discovered a small, quiet and lovely town filled with locals and not many tourists. We wandered around the town and admired the view around the water before stopping off for some lunch here. It’s filled with all local people but they are so welcoming and friendly plus the katsu was awesome!
After lunch we slowly made our way back up the hill and saw many interesting things along the way. There’s also a little bit of shopping on offer and you will see the hot springs all around the place however please note you can’t put your feet in them! The Public Onsen Bath (Hot Spring) is located at the main Atami train station.
Public Onsen Baths – Hot Springs
Onsen - Hot springs are waters heated by geothermal energy and there is a free Public Onsen Bath located right out front of the Atami train station for you to enjoy. And trust me when I say you will love it! The four of us being our nephew, friend, my husband and I put our feet in that water and stayed in there for about 20 minutes and we all felt invigorated after it! In fact, for about 2 hours after our feet were tingling in a really nice, relaxing and wonderful way. We all want to go back and experience it that feeling again. They say that there are many health benefits to the Onsen hot springs for things like relaxation and stress relief.
How to get to Atami from Tokyo
We were staying near Shinjuku so we caught the train to Tokyo station where the bullet train (Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen) can get you to Atami which takes 45 minutes one way and cost us around ¥7490 which is around $69USD per person.
My overview of Atami
One day we will go back and stay in one of their many hotels there so we can truly get the full Onsen experience. We all felt great for days after that 20 minutes I can only imagine how good I would be feeling after a few days of that! The town is filled with warm, welcoming locals. We all enjoyed our time there and were really glad we had a mini onsen experience.
Until next time I travel, I see, I share... This is Character 32 doing her best to help you!
