While my husband and I were temporarily living in Utrecht he needed to go to Frankfurt for meetings on the Monday. We decided to leave Utrecht on Friday and spend the weekend in Germany because we like to get around and explore places! We’d been to Frankfurt earlier in the year and wanted to explore more of the country. On the Saturday, we went to Düsseldorf and on Sunday we went to Heidelberg.
Being well seasoned travellers we know ‘how to see a city in a day’ and make the most of our time in a location. I’d researched the tourist attractions of Heidelberg for all of 5 minutes ‘Things to do and see in Heidelberg’ and had mapped out our path, here’s what we discovered.
We arrived by train into Heidelberg HBF from Frankfurt and made our way slowly through the town heading towards the famous Old Bridge known as Alte Brücke. However, before we arrived at the bridge hubby stopped off to try the local Schneeballen (snowballs) on offer. He said they tasted interesting…
the famous Old Bridge Alte Brücke
Once we reached the famous Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) I fell in love with the view. It doesn’t matter where you stand, on what side of the bridge, there is always something beautiful to see. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t in our favour and it hampered the view slightly making it a little harder to get a clear shot of Heidelberger Schloss.
After the bridge, we continued on our way through the streets heading towards the Heidelberger Schloss.
We took the funicular up to the castle, Heidelberger Schloss to see the most incredible views overlooking Heidelberg. There’s also places to eat and drink up there.
Oh and if you want an awesome Kabap then this is THE PLACE TO GO! (In Germany they call them a Kabap and in Australia we call them a Kabab, same same). Even though I’m a gluten free vegetarian I had to have a bite because the smell was just too good! I have to say it tasted awesome and my husband devoured it within minutes! The Kabap shop is located in the main street of the old town (Hauptstraße 173, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany).
My Overview of Heidelberg
The great thing about Heidelberg is you can see the city in a day because it’s not overly large. This beautiful more quieter German town is filled with lovely locals and wonderful food. History is everywhere you turn and the tourists flock here by the bus loads to see the sights. So why not join them and check out Heidelberg….
Until next time I travel, I see, I share... This is Character 32 doing her best to help you!
